BREEZE LOVE SOUL
AUTOBIOGRAPHY

My mother will always have a nickel
as long as I have a dime
My life will always have a purpose
as long as I have a rhyme
I will always remember who I am
as long as my bald head shiny
I have so many tears to cry
because I am so happy
And I hear the angels sounding
like pen against paper bounding
to make it work again
There is air in these words and
it makes them fly like birds and
I want to fly like that again
My heart will always have hope
as long as it’s beating
I’ll always say some shit about love
if that’s what I’m feeling
Like my first love was a dude and when
we made love it sounded like the ocean
My last love was a dude and he felt so good
I spread him all over like lotion
and it’s the moon that always gets me
one of the few women who get me hard as a tree
and I love being that hard again and again
There is color in this monochrome existence like
there are sounds in this monotone instance that
whatever the color, I want to love again
My mother will always have a dime
as long as I have a quarter
I will never go thirsty
As long as I know how to get water
I will always have a clue as to where I’m going
because I know where I’ve been
I will always know what it means to be righteous
because I know what it means to sin
and I hear the angels sounding
like pen against paper bounding
to make it work again
There is air in these words and
it makes them fly like birds and
I want to fly like that again
and it’s the moon that always gets me
one of the few women who get me hard as a tree
and I love being that hard again and again
There is color in this monochrome existence like
there are sounds in this monotone instance that
whatever the color, I want to love again
Our mothers, who art in heaven
Always watching over us I reckon
And when it’s over, I want to see them again
And when I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
And when it’s over, I want to come back again
This poem also came out of my time with PoetsJazzHouse. It is a very freeing poem for me as I jaunt across my past and my intentions, and I was always grateful for the space PoetsJazzHouse provided for me to “play” with words like this. One of the places we performed was Lemiert Park in Los Angeles, and I always found such a community and sense of family to be myself truly and authentically there. I was talking about making love to dudes a block from Crenshaw, and people were like, “cool.” And... it was cool.
